Wondering what a taxi will cost? Urban red taxis start at $29 for the first 2 km, then $2.1 per 200 m or per minute waiting; New Territories green taxis start at $25.5 and Lantau blue at $24. Enter a start and end point and the calculator estimates all three on the current Transport Department tariff, adding the tunnel tolls and luggage charges for the trip.
Before you type an address, the table gives the metered fare at round distances, computed live from the official tariff:
| Distance | 🔴 Urban (red) | 🟢 New Territories (green) | 🔵 Lantau (blue) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 km | $29 | $26 | $24 |
| 3 km | $40 | $35 | $34 |
| 5 km | $61 | $54 | $53 |
| 8 km | $92 | $83 | $81 |
| 10 km | $110 | $97 | $100 |
| 15 km | $145 | $132 | $148 |
| 20 km | $180 | $167 | $195 |
| 30 km | $250 | $237 | $275 |
Every minute the taxi waits or crawls in traffic adds the same amount as 200 m of distance, so a 10 km trip in rush hour can cost $20–40 more than the row above.
These are the Transport Department’s approved charges, in force since 2024-07-14 and unchanged since. The calculator uses exactly these figures:
| Charge | 🔴 Urban (red) | 🟢 New Territories (green) | 🔵 Lantau (blue) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 2 km (flagfall) | $29 | $25.5 | $24 |
| Each further 200 m, or each minute waiting | $2.1 | $1.9 | $1.9 |
| …once the fare reaches | $102.5 | $82.5 | $195 |
| …then each 200 m or minute | $1.4 | $1.4 | $1.6 |
Distance and waiting time are charged at the same rate off the same threshold — a taxi stuck in traffic keeps charging.
| Item | Charge |
|---|---|
| Each piece of baggage | $6 |
| Each animal or bird | $5 |
| Telephone booking | $5 |
| Wheelchairs and crutches | Free |
Charged on every piece in the boot, and on any piece in the cabin whose length + width + height exceeds 140 cm. Prams are chargeable; light hand baggage kept with you is not.
This is the statutory telephone-booking charge. App and fleet bookings are priced by the operator and are not covered by it.
Free by regulation for passengers with a disability — not at the driver’s discretion.
| Road | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Harbour crossing (toll + return toll) | $50 |
| Tai Lam Tunnel | $28 |
| Tate's Cairn Tunnel | $20 |
| Lion Rock Tunnel | $8 |
| Aberdeen Tunnel | $8 |
| Shing Mun Tunnels | $8 |
| Tsing Sha Control Area | $8 |
| Lantau Link | Free |
| Tseung Kwan O Tunnel | Free |
The $25 return toll is not charged if the hiring begins at a cross-harbour taxi stand, or if your final destination is not on the opposite side of the harbour.
Time-varying tolls do not apply to taxis: the Transport Department’s schedule gives taxis a flat $25 harbour toll at every hour of every day.

A red taxi from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central, about 6 km through the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, with one bag in the boot:
Red urban taxis serve most of Hong Kong (except south Lantau and Tung Chung Road) and cost the most. Green New Territories taxis are restricted to designated NT areas plus the airport, Disneyland and a few connection points such as Prince of Wales Hospital; cheaper flagfall and rate, but they cannot enter urban Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Blue Lantau taxis run only on Lantau and to the airport, with the lowest flagfall but a higher long-distance rate. In border areas — Sha Tin, Tai Po, Tuen Mun, Tung Chung — the calculator shows all three so you can pick the cheapest that can actually take you.
Harbour crossings (Cross-Harbour, Eastern, Western) cost a flat $25 for taxis at every hour — the time-of-day tolls apply to private cars, not taxis — plus a $25 return toll when you board away from a cross-harbour stand and end on the other side. Tai Lam Tunnel is $[object Object], Tate’s Cairn $[object Object], and Lion Rock, Aberdeen, Shing Mun and the Tsing Sha Highway $[object Object] each; the Lantau Link and Tseung Kwan O Tunnel are free. Each piece of luggage in the boot is $6, each animal $5, a telephone booking $5; wheelchairs and crutches are free by law. Hong Kong taxis have no late-night or holiday surcharge — the meter reads the same at 3 am as at noon.
Each of these is worked out from the distance Google measures for that drive and the official tariff above.
