Free Wi-Fi Hotspots in Hong Kong (Wi-Fi.HK)

When you want to save mobile data, or have just arrived without a local SIM, the questions are where the nearest free Wi-Fi is and which network name to pick. This page covers every fixed hotspot location published for the Wi-Fi.HK scheme — 3,831 venues with 39,531 access points — counted by district and venue type, and the map opens on the hotspots around you with the network name (SSID) of each.

What Wi-Fi.HK is

Wi-Fi.HK is a common Wi-Fi brand set up in 2014 by the Hong Kong Government and a number of public and private organisations, so that residents and visitors can find free public Wi-Fi easily. Organisations join voluntarily and offer Wi-Fi at their own venues, either completely free or free for a limited time. You do not register and you give no personal information. The Government’s own funded service, in public libraries, sports venues, community halls, major parks and government buildings, is part of the same brand.

How many free Wi-Fi venues there are

The table counts venues and access points by venue type, worked out each week from the official open data. Several access points in one building count as one venue; the access points are added up.

Which network name (SSID) to join

At government venues the network name is simply Wi-Fi.HK. Every other organisation has its own: some carry the Wi-Fi.HK brand (usually written “Wi-Fi.HK via” and the organisation’s name), others use the name of the organisation or the venue. The reliable answer is the SSID recorded for the venue you are in, which is shown on each map card and in the district lists.

The older government network names freegovwifi, freegovwifi-e (the encrypted connection) and “Wi-Fi.HK via GovWiFi” were withdrawn in early November 2018. Wi-Fi.HK is the only one now.

How to connect

  1. At a venue that has joined Wi-Fi.HK, switch on Wi-Fi on your device.
  2. Choose the venue’s network name from the list of available networks and connect.
  3. When the landing page appears, read the terms and conditions and disclaimers and tap Accept. They differ from one organisation to another.

If the landing page does not appear by itself, open a browser and visit any website.

Time limits and security

The scheme’s minimum is 30 minutes of free use per device per day from each organisation, and some organisations set no limit. The Government Wi-Fi service has a connection time limit of 240 minutes; you are disconnected when you reach it and can reconnect if a connection is free.

Organisations in the scheme provide unencrypted connections only, so the official advice is not to send sensitive or personal information over public Wi-Fi. For a transaction, use a website or app that encrypts the connection itself, or a VPN.

Do I need to register or pay to use Wi-Fi.HK?
No registration and no personal information: connect, accept the terms and you are online. The service is either completely free or free for a limited time. Each organisation gives every device at least 30 minutes a day, and some set no limit.
What is the government Wi-Fi network name? Does freegovwifi still work?
The Government Wi-Fi service uses the network name “Wi-Fi.HK”. The older names freegovwifi, freegovwifi-e and “Wi-Fi.HK via GovWiFi” were withdrawn in early November 2018. Other organisations have their own network names; go by the SSID recorded for the venue.
Is there a time limit on government Wi-Fi?
Yes. The Government Wi-Fi service has a 240-minute connection time limit. You are disconnected when you reach it and can reconnect if a connection is available. You are also disconnected when you move out of the coverage area.
Is public Wi-Fi in Hong Kong safe to use?

How often is the hotspot data updated?
Weekly, from the Wi-Fi.HK fixed hotspot locations published as open data by the Digital Policy Office; the refresh date is at the foot of the page. The data gives each hotspot’s location, network name and number of access points, not whether it is working at this moment.
