Registered vehicle maintenance workshops in Hong Kong

Looking for a garage? EMSD runs a voluntary registration scheme for vehicle maintenance workshops: a registered workshop pledges to work to EMSD’s Practice Guidelines, employs registered vehicle mechanics and displays a signage giving its registered type and number. This page lists all 1,550 registered workshops on EMSD’s published list: search by name or registration number, browse by district, or list the workshops that service electric vehicles or open on Sundays.

What registration means

EMSD launched the Voluntary Registration Scheme for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops in 2015. To register, a workshop pledges to operate at a quality level not lower than the Practice Guidelines for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops in its technical, environmental, safety, staff training, service and documentation requirements. A registered workshop must also employ Registered Vehicle Mechanics, have a working bay with a fixed cover, and accept the scheme’s complaint handling mechanism and its decisions. EMSD issues each one a registration certificate and an identification signage specifying its registered type and registration number, which is displayed at the workshop; a registration is valid for three years.

EMSD registers each workshop under one of four types:

  • Type One (1): Pledged to endeavour to abide by the Practice Guidelines for Vehicle Maintenance Workshops, and being a franchised bus company workshop or vehicle dealer workshop.
  • Type Two (2): Pledged to endeavour to abide by the Practice Guidelines, and employing at least 5 vehicle mechanics, of whom at least one must be a validly registered vehicle mechanic, collectively qualified for at least 2 different major registered service classes; with at least 5 vehicle working bays.
  • Type Three (3): Pledged to endeavour to abide by the Practice Guidelines, and employing at least one validly registered vehicle mechanic, with at least one vehicle working bay.
  • Type Four (4): Pledged to endeavour to abide by the Practice Guidelines, and situated in a residential building or a composite building with domestic parts.

Its service scope says which vehicles it is registered to maintain. EMSD has three levels of electric vehicle maintenance; a high-voltage (“Type H”) workshop’s registration must be supported by written certification from the vehicle manufacturer or an audit by a third-party certification body recognised by the Vehicle Maintenance Technical Advisory Committee.

  • IC: Internal combustion engine vehicles
  • EVE: Electric vehicles (elementary)
  • EVL: Electric vehicles (low voltage)
  • EVH: Electric vehicles (high voltage)

EMSD marks a workshop “*” when the registration status of the workshop is under review. The types of vehicles serviced, the services provided and the business hours on EMSD’s list are not registration requirements: EMSD gives them for reference only, so check with the workshop.

How to check a workshop

  1. Search for it on EMSD’s Register of Vehicle Maintenance Workshops, by company name or address, in its map or list view.
  2. Look for the registration certificate and the identification signage, which show the registered type and registration number, at the workshop.
  3. Compare the name, address and registration number with what the workshop gave you.

This site copies EMSD’s open-data list weekly, so a registration made, renewed or ended in the meantime may not show here yet: EMSD’s register is the authority. Details are on EMSD’s pages about the registration scheme, the workshop types and electric vehicle maintenance.

To protect privacy, this site never shows the name of a natural person. Companies, partnerships, firms and trade names are listed under their names, a sole proprietor under the trading name only, and a name that on its own reads as a person’s is not shown. An entry whose name is a person’s is counted but not named, and so is one whose name seems to contain a person’s full name until it has been reviewed; neither has a page of its own.

Registered vehicle maintenance workshops by district

An entry belongs to the district its address is in: the point EMSD’s list gives for it, inside the Home Affairs Department’s district boundary; an entry without a usable point is placed by the register’s own district field, and failing that from its address. Each district page lists every entry there.
