Registered electrical contractors in Hong Kong

Before you hire someone for electrical work, it is worth knowing whether they are registered. EMSD says that all electrical work — new installation, alteration, addition, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair — should be carried out by registered electrical contractors or registered electrical workers. This page lists all 14,674 registered electrical contractors on EMSD’s published list: search by name or registration number, or browse by district.

What registration means

EMSD keeps the register of electrical contractors under the Electricity Ordinance (Cap. 406) and the Electricity (Registration) Regulations. It says the register is there so that the public has a list of the electrical contractors registered to carry out electrical work in Hong Kong, and can check the information on, and the authenticity of, the contractors listed. From EMSD’s notes for registered electrical contractors:

  • A registration is valid for three years; the certificate shows its effective and expiry dates.
  • A registered contractor may employ only registered electrical workers to be responsible for its electrical work, and must supervise them effectively.
  • It must display its registration certificate in a prominent place at its principal place of business, and may carry on business only at the business addresses registered with EMSD.
  • After completing work on a fixed electrical installation, and before it is energised, the contractor has the installation inspected, tested and certified by a registered electrical worker it employs, on a Work Completion Certificate (Form WR1), which it then issues to the owner of the installation.
  • EMSD monitors registered contractors’ performance and, where there is evidence that one has breached the requirements, may take disciplinary action or prosecute.

How to check a contractor

  1. Search for the contractor on EMSD’s register of registered electrical contractors, by name, registration number or district.
  2. Compare the name, address and registration with what the contractor gave you, and look at the registration certificate displayed at its principal place of business.
  3. When the work is finished, the contractor issues you the Work Completion Certificate (Form WR1), signed by the registered electrical worker and endorsed by the contractor.

EMSD updates its list daily and this site copies it weekly, so a registration made, renewed or ended in the meantime may not show here yet: EMSD’s register is the authority. EMSD’s Notes for Registered Electrical Contractors and its questions and answers on electrical installations have the details.

To protect privacy, this site never shows the name of a natural person. Companies, partnerships, firms and trade names are listed under their names, a sole proprietor under the trading name only, and a name that on its own reads as a person’s is not shown. A contractor whose name is a person’s is counted but not named, and so is one whose firm name seems to contain a person’s full name until it has been reviewed. Only listed contractors have a page of their own.

Contractors by district

A contractor belongs to the district its address is in: the point EMSD’s list gives for it, inside the Home Affairs Department’s district boundary; a contractor without a point is placed from its address. Each district page lists every contractor there.
