Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are the opening hours of a Maternal and Child Health Centre?
The Family Health Service states the usual hours as Monday to Friday 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5:30 pm, plus the 2nd and 4th non-public-holiday Saturdays of each month, 9 am to 12 noon; registration ends 30 minutes before closing. Some centres do not operate daily — see each centre's hours below.
Do Maternal and Child Health Centres charge a fee?
The Department of Health states that all child health services at MCHCs are free for eligible persons; non-eligible persons pay HK$365 per attendance.
What does an MCHC provide?
The integrated child health and development programme: parenting (leaflets, talks, parenting activities and individual counselling), immunisation from birth to five under the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme, and health and developmental surveillance — a newborn physical examination, growth monitoring and formal hearing and vision screening at set ages, with referral to specialist clinics when a problem is suspected.
Do MCHCs open in a typhoon or black rainstorm?
No. The Department of Health states that when the Black Rainstorm Warning or Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above is in force, MCHC services are suspended and appointments cancelled; if the signal is lowered two hours or more before normal closing time, the centre resumes as soon as possible, and affected clients rebook through the online booking system.
How many Maternal and Child Health Centres are there?
32, according to the Department of Health's open data (synced weekly here). All of them are listed below by district.
